New Coins in Malaysia


See the new coins above?? That's right, you didnt see wrongly... It's our "NEW Malaysia Coins"... which will be starting to use in January 2012, by Bank Negara Malaysia... =)

The Malaysian National Bank (BNM) will published their 3rd series of new coins in few months time.. BNM Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz said that the new coins are in denominations of 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents and 50 cents is inspired by the unique characteristics that shape the culture and rich heritage of this country.

"The motive of this coin design features the natural beauty, flora and fauna and traditional handicrafts that can be found in Malaysia" he said at the launching of the 500,000 sets of commemorative coins to mark a series of new coins.

He also said that the new coin series is smaller and lighter for the public to use.

It also has the edge different to facilitate the public and the visually impaired to identify.

The coin which is in yellow and silver colour is made using the latest advance in manufacturing technology coin features which include better security to prevent counterfeiting.

The new metal being used to make these coins are of the type of higher quality and durable.

This new series will be in circulation together with the existing series. Existing series will be removed from the circulation gradually.

The central bank will also work with the financial institutions, businesses and vendors who handle cash to ensure a smooth transition.

"Vendors who operate cash machines will be given a period of six months to modify the machine to facilitate the use of these new coins," said Zeti again.

At the ceremony, he also introduced the new fourth series of bank notes to be launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in September
